Business Line / Function

The Global Market Securities Settlements team ensures that North and South American domestic security transactions (bonds, equities, complex securities, ETFs, SLAB, repo) and the positions recorded in the books under CIB ITO’s mandate match the commitments taken with counterparties. This is done within a secure set‑up and in accordance with Group and regulatory policies, as well as contractual agreements. Within the Securities Settlement Department, the main processes include pre‑ and post‑settlement activities, clearing, and event‑related accounting for securities that are in scope.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a team that manages:
  • Settlement of security transactions and associated products in a timely, cost‑effective manner.
  • Timely resolution of Nostro and depot breaks.
  • Mitigation of operational and reputational risk by escalating issues promptly and efficiently.
  • Liaison with clients, brokers/counterparties, and internal support functions to ensure smooth trade settlement.
  • Enhancement, synergy creation, and standardisation of functions across regions.
  • People‑agenda implementation.
  • Maintenance of a robust control environment across functions.

Key Responsibilities of the Team Managed by the Incumbent

  • Settlement Operations – Ensure settlement of security transactions and associated products booked in Calypso is performed timely and cost‑effectively:
  •  
  • Instruct, match, and settle all trades on schedule.
  • Monitor failing trades and reduce fails by pairing off or partially delivering where possible.
  • Conduct daily pre‑matching of trades.
  • Manage cash‑related funding trades.
  • Nostro and Depot Reconciliation – Resolve reconciliation breaks promptly:
  •  
  • Investigate and, where feasible, clear Nostro breaks reported by the Securities Control team.
  • Pass corrective entries to Calypso to clean up outstanding items.
  • Investigate and rectify depot breaks reported by the Securities Control team.
  • Address accounting breaks raised by the Securities Control and Accounting teams.
  • Escalate items that present operational risk to the direct manager.
  • Cost and Risk Minimisation – Contribute to lower settlement costs and reduced operational risk:
  •  
  • Follow risk‑aware procedures and compliance rules.
  • Monitor market‑risk events (e.g., buy‑ins) and take appropriate action.
  • Improve straight‑through‑processing (STP) rates with custodians, updating static data as required.
  • Reduce manual instructions to agents, thereby cutting cost, manual intervention, and settlement risk.
  • Use the escalation process when operational risk is detected.
  • Departmental Success – Support the overall operation of the settlement department:
  •  
  • Maintain close relationships with traders, sales, domestic agents, and custodians; promptly raise issues when necessary.
  • Communicate with, and assist, other operational departments as required.
  • Keep direct managers informed of any potential problems or issues. 

Required Qualifications, Competencies and Experience, 

  • Bachelor’s degree (any discipline) with minimum 7 years in operational support at managerial capacity, preferably within Global Market Securities Settlements  
  • Prior middle‑office or operational experience is mandatory.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite – especially Excel; ability to learn new systems quickly.
  • Strong Domain Knowledge in financial markets and investment banking.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
  • Team player who can also operate independently.
  • Comfortable collaborating across Sales, Trading, Accounting, Technology and other MO teams.
  • Strong control focus with solid financial and operational acumen.
  • Leadership & Development: Coach and mentor team members; foster a high‑performance culture.
  • Stakeholder Management: Communicate clearly and build trust with internal and external partners.
